I was lucky enough to go to LA for work and see my commercial being filmed. It was absolutely gorgeous weather, and my hotel was right on the beach by Santa Monica pier which was incredible. As great as it was out there though, I could never imagine living there and needing a car just to sit in ridiculous amounts of traffic, and I was very happy to come home

Newspaper Blackout Poems

Just discovered the artist Austin Kleon who takes newspaper articles and blacks out everything except a select few words that create a poem. An interesting way of taking something so plain and everyday and making it into a work of art!

Lettering inspiration

I've been looking at a lot of typography online lately, trying to get inspired and motivated to start a personal project. I read an article about creating something interesting every day, and would really like to try and make the time to do it myself. I've been following the Daily Drop Cap by Jessica Hische, who has some really incredible work that makes me want to experiment more with lettering, and here's a poster I just stumbled upon that takes letters from well-known logos to create a really interesting alphabet poster:

Now I just need to find the time to start something of my own!

winter in the city

You'd think that in a city that's constantly filled with lights and noise, adding a little more wouldn't make a difference, but I just love how the city becomes a different place around Christmas with all the light shows and Christmas music blanketing the streets. Here are a few shots from the other night when I went to go see the tree in Rockefellar Center...I especially love the giant ornament sculptures =)

Connie's Bakery

Finally got a chance to go see my Connie's billboards at the Mt. Kisco train station. They're different from my original designs that used icing for the lettering, but I think they turned out well and I'm so happy that they even included my name on the billboard!

Usually the train station is occupied by one or both of the NW trains during the early morning commute, but today the station was empty and for once I was able to see the view of Astoria and the ConEd plant spewing surprisingly pretty pollution into the air.

Great Typography Article

My sister just posted this article from the NY Times and it pretty much sums up my relationship with typography. I feel that having a basic knowledge of typefaces is both a blessing and a curse: it's great when you find awesome typefaces in design that are inspiring and perfect, but on the other hand it makes you upset/angry/disappointed in the entire human population when you stumble upon horrific fonts with bad leading, or acceptable fonts used in completely the wrong situation. While the issues of bad typography have been bothering me for years--ever since my first design classes in college, one memory stands out in particular. I was in the emergency room, hooked up to an IV and barely aware of my surroundings, and the one thing I remember is how annoyed I was at a horribly designed poster in Comic Sans, one of my least favorite fonts of all time. After this experience, I can totally relate to the author of this article when he states "If it’s bad for me (an amateur enthusiast who is interested in typography, but isn’t hugely knowledgeable about it), what must it be like for the purists? Dreadful, it seems." I can't even imagine...

astoria park

Mom came down to visit this weekend and we decided to go explore Astoria Park since it was so gorgeous outside. The park is so pretty and the bridges look so sculptural in contrast with the natural curves and bends in the hills. I tried taking some panoramic shots; theyre not perfect but I think they turned out pretty well for my first time and without a tripod...
